Microarray Technology

DNA Microarray technology aims not only to identify but also measure the expression levels of thousands of genes in the same experiment. For this purpose, thousands of DNA strands that are complementary to the target sequence are bind, synthesized or spotted on a small glass surface. Most commonly used DNA microarray types are spot microarrays and oligonucleotide arrays. While a spot microarray is manifactured by spotting previously identified cDNA segments on usually a glass surface, a high-density oligonucleotide microarray is manifactured by in situ synthesis of oligonucleotides.

The most important advantage of Affymetrix technology is that utilization of only a small number of reagents is sufficient to form a complex array, since the DNA sequences are synthesized directly on the array.

Microarray technology assists scientists in carrying out several genetic studies, from identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and metilation pattern anomalies to analysis of disease development and even identification of drug targets.
