Studies in the field of metabolomics aim to create metabolite profile of a collected biological sample (tissue, organism, etc.) by investigating the unique chemical fingerprints (metabolites) that are produced as a result of the cellular processes. These studies allow access to the information about the biochemical processes and the general metabolic status of a biological system. Metabolomics can aid scientists in several aspects concerning disease management; such as identifying state and course of diseases, tracking patients’ response to medication, determining targets for drug development.
